Overview
Washington, DC sits at the confluence of two vital rivers, the Potomac and the Anacostia. Over 5 million people live within the watershed. The Anacostia is an 8.5-mile tributary of the Potomac, which is 405 miles long and flows into Chesapeake Bay. Throughout history, environmental obstacles coincided with social ones on the Anacostia. Despite decades of neglect, much has changed in the attitude and policy towards the Anacostia and its neighborhoods since the 1980s. Much progress has been made, improving the watershed quality and ecosystem health dramatically.
Since 2010 Wilderness Inquiry and our partners have been exploring the Anacostia from the seats of our custom build 24-foot voyageur canoes. Your class may explore Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, watch bald eagles fish, and learn more about the many initiatives and funding endeavors taking place to reclaim the river’s natural beauty.
