Overview
Join us for an urban wilderness experience that will surprise and delight you. Your adventure is based at Picnic Island in Fort Snelling State Park. You’ll set up camp as a group, hike Picnic and Pike Islands, and learn about the amazing history of Ft. Snelling. This is where Lt. Colonel Henry Leavenworth established Cantonement New Hope in 1819. It is also the place that many Mdewakanton Dakota people consider the center of the universe, and where 2,000 Native Americans were interred after the U.S.-Dakota Conflict in 1862. Ft. Snelling is truly the birthplace of modern Minnesota. Back at Picnic Island, you’ll enjoy bird songs, flowing water, and the crackling of a campfire as you relax. This is a fantastic way to explore the wilderness right out your back door.
