From Susan Abbott, who went on her first WI trip in 1980 and her second just this winter:
When I first moved to Minnesota in 1980, I saw a small ad in a magazine for canoe trips to the Boundary Waters. That sounded like an interesting idea, so I signed up. I think back then, canoeing in the BWCA was the only activity that WI was involved in. Details are sketchy after all these years, but I do remember what a great time I had, and I loved the mission of the organization.
Then I moved out of Minnesota, got married, came back, raised a daughter, started a business, and, well, life happened. I’ve watched the growth of WI over the years, and thought a lot recently about taking another trip. When the Winter Adventure came across my Facebook feed, I was hooked.
I was a bit concerned about my physical ability – things don’t work as well as they did in my 20s – but I also knew that the “all ages, abilities and backgrounds” mission was in my favor. The trip exceeded my expectations! I can say that I loved every minute. Snowshoeing, dog sledding, hiking, even sleeping outdoors – so many activities and all in the company of inspiring people I am privileged to have met.
I cannot say enough positive things about the staff. They are so passionate about their work, and it shows. They engaged each and every participant, coached and encouraged and celebrated, and even read aloud from Sigurd Olson. The experiences, 36 years apart, were quite different, but the feeling was the same – accomplishment, camaraderie, teamwork, and being alive in the wilderness. I encourage everyone to try a Wilderness Inquiry adventure; it will enrich your life.
