Overview
The Detroit River serves as a key transportation route connecting Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Superior to the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Erie Canal. Though only 24 miles long, the Detroit River is one of the world’s busiest waterways. Despite its industrial history, it supports a plethora of wildlife including lake sturgeon, eastern fox snake, canvas back ducks, eagles, cattails, deer, river otters, migrating birds, and much more! Forming a border between Michigan and Ontario, the Detroit is the only river to be designated as both an American and a Canadian Heritage River. Wilderness Inquiry has been bringing Michiganders onto the Detroit River since 2014.
