Overview
If you’ve been dreaming of an African wildlife tour that feels immersive but not extreme, this 12‑day Tanzania safari is designed for you. Travel with a small group of like‑minded adults as you explore Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Eyasi, Lake Manyara, Tarangire, and Arusha National Park. You’ll enjoy comfortable lodges and tented camps, expert local guides, and game drives that bring you close to elephants, big cats, giraffes, zebras, rhinos, and more—without sacrificing safety or comfort. This is an international vacation that blends iconic wildlife viewing, meaningful cultural encounters, and time to simply sit back and soak in the African plains.
Timed to coincide with the Great Migration in August, your days in Serengeti National Park put you at the heart of one of nature’s most dramatic events. From your base near the Mara River, you may witness thousands of wildebeest and zebras crossing as part of their annual journey, while scanning for lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, hippos, cape buffalo, and countless bird species from open‑air safari jeeps.
Throughout your African wildlife tour, Tanzanian guides will share deep knowledge of local wildlife, culture, and conservation. You’ll learn to identify birds, tracks, and animal behaviors, hear stories about elephant families you’ll come to recognize by name, and see firsthand how national parks and nearby communities work together to protect these landscapes. Along the way, visits with Maasai, Datoga, and Hadzabe communities, plus stops at local schools and markets, add rich cultural layers to an already unforgettable journey.
By the end of the trip, you’ll have more than just incredible photos—you’ll have a lasting connection to the ecosystems and people who call northern Tanzania home.

After a final Serengeti morning, pass through the scenic Maasai village of Endulen on your way to Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Drive to Tarangire National Park, known for its sweeping landscapes, giant baobab trees, and large elephant herds. Enjoy a picnic lunch and a day of game drives, often seeing elephants at remarkably close range.

Day 12 – Arusha National Park and Farewell
Spend your final day exploring Arusha National Park, watching for baboons, giraffes, and zebras beneath Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second highest peak. After a final game drive and farewell with your group, transfer to the airport for your flight home.
Our Approach to Accessibility
Terrain and daily activity
Most wildlife viewing happens from comfortable 4×4 safari vehicles on established roads and tracks. You’ll encounter a mix of paved and unpaved surfaces, with some uneven ground, steps, and occasional inclines at lodges, markets, viewpoints, and trailheads. Optional walks and short hikes—such as the Endoro waterfall trail or walks along Lake Eyasi—can usually be adjusted in distance and pace.
Pacing and options
The daily pace is active but intentional, with time to rest built in. Many days feature an early morning game drive, a midday break at camp or lodge, and an afternoon outing. Your guides will communicate the plan each day so you can decide what feels right based on your energy level.
Mobility and access considerations
Because this is a lodge‑based and safari‑tent itinerary in wild settings, some mobility limitations may make certain activities challenging. Pathways may be gravel, dirt, or grass; lighting can be lower at night in some camps; and vehicles require a step up to enter.
That said, many older adults and travelers with mobility concerns can enjoy this trip. We encourage you to contact us in advance. We’ll be honest about what to expect and where support is available so you can make an informed decision about whether this qualifies as an accessible vacation for you.
Pre-trip communications
Wilderness Inquiry staff have decades of experience supporting people experiencing disability and mixed-age groups. Let us know about mobility devices, balance considerations, dietary needs, or other access needs on your registration form and during your pre-trip conversation. We will be honest about what is and is not feasible on this itinerary and suggest options or different trips if needed.Visit our Traveling with a Disability page to learn more. If you have questions about whether this Tanzania trip is a good fit, please reach out. A short call or email exchange with our team is often the best way to talk through details and decide together.

When is the best time to join this Africa wildlife tour?
This Tanzania safari is timed to give you excellent wildlife viewing across Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara, Tarangire, and Arusha National Park, with strong chances to witness the Great Migration in the Serengeti. Exact timing of river crossings and herd movements can vary by year, but your dates are selected to align with peak activity in this region. If you have flexibility, our team can help you choose departure dates that best match your priorities for a private trip—whether that’s seeing the Great Migration, birdlife, green landscapes, or fewer crowds.
What level of fitness is needed for this safari adventure?
This trip is designed as a soft‑adventure, mostly vehicle‑based safari that works well for many adults. Most days focus on game drives in comfortable 4×4 vehicles, with optional short walks or hikes on uneven ground. If you have specific mobility considerations, we encourage you to contact us so we can talk through daily activities and help you decide if this counts as an accessible vacation for you.
Is this Tanzania trip appropriate for travelers with limited mobility or older adults?
Many older adults and travelers with varying abilities enjoy this itinerary because the core experiences—game drives, cultural visits, and scenic viewing—are primarily vehicle‑based. Lodges and tented camps generally offer solid walkways, staff support, and private en‑suite rooms, though surfaces can be uneven and there may be steps.
What is included in this international trip price, and what extra costs should I plan for?
In general, the trip price includes transportation during the trip, lodging, meals, park entrance fees, scheduled activities, and the services of professional local guides and drivers. You’ll want to budget separately for international airfare, travel insurance, optional tips for guides and lodge staff, beverages beyond standard offerings, and personal items such as souvenirs or extra snacks. A detailed inclusions list is provided with your booking materials so you can see exactly what’s covered on this tour.
How safe are the game drives and wildlife viewing activities?
Safety is a top priority on this Tanzania safari adventure. All wildlife viewing takes place with experienced local guides who understand animal behavior, park regulations, and safe viewing distances. You will remain in the vehicle during game drives except at designated stops, and your guides will brief you on how to move around camps and lodges in wildlife areas. While wild animals are unpredictable, following guide instructions and established safety protocols keeps risk low and allows you to enjoy close‑up viewing with peace of mind.
Do I need special health preparations for this international trip?
Health preparations can vary based on your home country, personal health history, and current public health guidelines. For international travel, some travelers choose to update routine vaccinations and may discuss additional vaccines or medications with their healthcare provider, depending on the regions they plan to visit and their own risk profile. Wilderness Inquiry will provide general pre‑trip information and resources so you can have an informed conversation with your doctor. We strongly recommend scheduling that appointment well before departure to review any recommended vaccinations, medications, and personal health considerations, and to make a plan that feels right for you.
What are the accommodations like on this Tanzania safari?
This is a lodge‑based and safari‑tent trip designed for comfort at the end of each adventurous day. You’ll stay in a mix of lodges and permanent safari camps chosen for their location, hospitality, and strong sense of place. Typically there are two people per room, matched by gender or by requests to room together. In most rooms, solo travelers have single beds and couples share beds. Bathroom facilities at lodges include hot showers and common accommodations. While at safari camps, bathroom facilities range from permanent campground bathhouses to private facilities attached to each tent. We make every effort to ensure privacy and cleanliness, wherever you stay. Single travelers are warmly welcomed. If you are traveling alone, you’ll be matched with a roommate unless you choose to purchase a single supplement for your own room throughout the trip.
What types of meals can I expect in Tanzania?
Relax while all your Tanzanian meals are prepared for you. We’ll enjoy a variety of fresh, healthy options that include poultry, beef, fish, vegetables, and fruit. We pride ourselves on offering delicious breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks that keep you energized throughout your wilderness adventure. While we’ll enjoy sharing happy hours together, the purchase of alcoholic beverages is not included in the trip fees.
