Day 1 – Welcome to the Big Island
Aloha and welcome to Hawaii. Your adventure begins with a pickup from Kona Airport and a short transfer to your hotel in downtown Kona. After settling in, you can stroll along the waterfront, enjoy the ocean views, and start getting to know your trip mates. Your Outdoor Leader will review the week’s plans, answer questions, and help you feel ready for the days of hiking and exploring ahead.
Day 2 – Hapuna Beach, Petroglyphs, and Island History
After breakfast, you travel north along the Kohala Coast to Hapuna Beach State Park, one of Hawaii’s most beloved white sand beaches. Here you can swim, walk the shoreline, or simply relax and take in sweeping views of the Pacific. Later, you visit the Mauna Lani Puako Petroglyphs, where you walk among lava rock carvings that tell stories of Hawaii’s past.
In the afternoon, the group continues on to Pu‘ukohola Heiau, an important temple of Kamehameha the Great and one of the most sacred historical sites on the island. You will round out the day with a stop at Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company, where you can sample local flavors and learn how these island‑grown nuts are harvested and prepared before returning to your lodging in Kona.
Day 3 – Big Island Waterfalls Adventure
Today is devoted to the lush, waterfall‑filled side of the island. You will embark on a Big Island Waterfall adventure, traveling to scenic viewpoints and short trails that showcase the island’s dramatic cliffs, rivers, and cascading falls. A picnic‑style lunch is included, giving you time to relax outdoors and savor the scenery between stops. This day offers a change of pace from the drier west side and highlights the incredible variety of ecosystems you experience on an inclusive Hawaii vacation. In the evening, you return to your accommodations tired in the best way and full of new impressions.
Day 4 – Snorkeling, Coffee Country, and Coastal Parks
Your day begins at Kahaluʻu Beach, a favorite spot for snorkeling and swimming. With guidance from your Outdoor Leader and local experts, learn about the reef, tropical fish, and sea turtles that make this bay their home. From there, head into Kona coffee country to visit a local coffee farm, where you can see how beans are grown, processed, and roasted on the volcanic slopes above town.
In the afternoon, you will explore Kaloko‑Honokōhau National Historical Park, walking coastal trails past fishponds, petroglyphs, and tide pools. The day continues with a visit to Pu‘uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, a powerful place of refuge and cultural history. After a day of exploring Hawaii’s west coast, you will have made it to the southern part of the Island where you will check into locally owned lodging in the community of Pahala.
Day 5 – Exploring Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park
Today you will journey toward Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park for a full day focused on the island’s volcanic landscapes. Explore trails, craters, and viewpoints that reveal how lava has shaped the island over time. A picnic‑style lunch is enjoyed outdoors, and later, share dinner at a local restaurant before experiencing the park after dark. End the evening with a Twilight Volcano and Stargazing tour with a trusted local partner, which allows extra time inside the park.
Day 6 – Hilo, Queen Liliʻuokalani Park, and More Time in Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast, you will visit downtown Hilo, a charming bayside town with local shops, markets, and a relaxed pace that contrasts with the resort areas of the west side. From there, stroll through Queen Liliʻuokalani Gardens, a beautifully landscaped Japanese‑style park with views across Hilo Bay.
Later in the day, you’ll return to Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park for additional hiking and exploration. This extra time in the park gives you a chance to revisit favorite spots, explore new trails, or simply slow down and take in the unique plants, geology, and vistas that make this one of Hawaii’s most unforgettable places.
Day 7 – Farewell
Your final day on the Big Island is intentionally open so you can enjoy a slower pace before departure. You might choose to relax at the beach, pick up a few last souvenirs in downtown Kona, or revisit a favorite café with new friends from the trip. When it is time to leave, you’ll head to the airport for your flight home, carrying memories of waterfalls, volcanoes, sea turtles, and the shared experience of a Hawaii adventure.
Accessibility & Support
Wilderness Inquiry is committed to making adventure accessible and welcoming for as many people as possible. This lodge‑based trip is ideal for adults who want to explore Hawaii’s natural and cultural highlights with the support of an experienced guide, comfortable lodging, and a flexible, inclusive approach. If you are looking for an accessible vacation that still offers genuine adventure, this Big Island itinerary is designed with you in mind. Accessibility considerations include:
- Pace and Distance: Daily hiking distances are kept moderate, generally between one and five miles spread across the day. Your Outdoor Leader will set a conversational pace, build in rest breaks, and can often adjust timing so participants have time to enjoy views, take photos, and hydrate. Transportation is used between sites, so you’re not carrying heavy packs or covering long distances in a single push.
- Terrain: Trails on this trip range from paved or hard‑packed paths to more rugged surfaces with roots, rocks, or uneven lava rock. Some sections may be steeper or require extra balance and attention. Your Outdoor Leader will provide realistic descriptions of each outing and can help you decide which hikes are the best fit for your comfort level. Support with footing and balance can often be provided on the trail, and the group moves at a pace that allows people to navigate carefully.
- Support and Gear: Before your trip, our staff can talk through questions about mobility, endurance, and comfort so you know what to expect. The Outdoor Leader in the field can offer support with getting in and out of vehicles, carrying day gear if needed, and making on‑the‑spot adjustments for weather or energy levels. Recommendations for sturdy shoes, trekking poles, and other adaptive gear can help you participate more comfortably in this Hawaii adventure trip.
- Lodging and Facilities: Because this is a lodge‑based itinerary, you’ll return to comfortable beds, showers, and shared common spaces each evening. Facilities have ADA amenities that work well for most travelers, and we can often share details about room layouts, bathroom access, and stair use in advance. If you have specific accessibility needs related to lodging or facilities, our team will work with you to understand what’s required and determine whether this trip is a good match.
- Medical and Individual Needs: We encourage participants to share medical considerations, medications, or other support needs with us ahead of time so we can plan appropriately. Guides carry basic first‑aid supplies, and we build in time for rest, hydration, and snacks throughout the day. If you travel with mobility aids, medical devices, or other equipment, we can discuss storage, transport, and charging options as needed. Our goal is to work collaboratively so that your inclusive Hawaii vacation feels both adventurous and realistic for your situation.
Visit our Traveling with a Disability page to learn more. If you have questions about whether this trip is a good fit, please reach out. A short call or email exchange with our team is often the best way to talk through details and decide together.
What is included in the trip price?
Trip fees cover all of your needs while you are traveling with us — including equipment, food, guides, permits, etc. You are responsible for bringing personal clothing and hygiene supplies. Gear such as sleeping bags, pads, and cots can be checked out during the booking process for no additional fee.
Could the itinerary change after I sign up?
Your trip is dependent on weather, availability, and potential other unforeseen circumstances. All itineraries online are “sample” itineraries that are subject to change. Please check your confirmation packet for the most up-to-date information, or call us with questions. There are many different route choices available within our trip locations for hiking and paddling. The routes will be chosen by Wilderness Inquiry Outdoor Leaders based on availability and the strength of the group.
What type of food will I eat during the trip?
Typical menus for overnight camping trips include pesto pasta, burritos, stir-fry, avocado caprese wraps, brats and burgers, apple cobbler, and plenty of snacks. The exact menus vary trip-by-trip. On longer wilderness expeditions, we bring more nonperishable foods that keep well for days without refrigeration. On international trips, we tend to eat the local cuisine. We can accommodate most dietary restrictions and preferences — please note this information on your registration form.
I or a member of my family has a disability. Can I/they still participate?
We strive to put accessibility at the forefront of our programs so that individuals of all abilities, including people with disabilities, can successfully participate in our trips. If you or a member of your family has a disability, you will have an opportunity to confidentially share more during the registration process for your trip. A member of our team will connect with you further over the phone to make sure we are able to provide the appropriate support or accommodations you need to have a safe and rewarding experience on your trip.
Do you offer scholarships or financial aid?
Yes! We believe the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors should be available to everyone. To keep our programs as financially accessible as possible, each year we raise funds to support need-based scholarships. Certain restrictions apply. Financial aid is available for a select number of trips and is typically not available for international trips. Visit our Financial Aid page to learn more and apply.
What is your cancellation policy?
Trip deposits are due at the time of booking and are generally non-refundable.

Your guides handle the logistics, help break the ice with other participants, and create a friendly, inclusive atmosphere where it’s easy to connect at your own pace. Many solo travelers appreciate having their own room option when a paid single supplement is available, while others are comfortable with a shared room—details about rooming arrangements are provided in your trip information. What if I’m not sure this trip is right for my ability level?
We’re happy to talk through your needs and expectations. In some cases, another accessible vacation or different season may be a better match. Our goal is to help you choose a trip where you’ll feel supported, safe, and able to enjoy the experience. If you have additional questions, please reach out—our team is ready to help you plan your Boundary Waters winter adventure.
What types of meals can I expect on this lodge-based adventure?
You can expect hearty, satisfying meals that support full days outside. Breakfasts and dinners are usually enjoyed at the lodge or prepared by your guides, while lunches are often picnic‑style on the trail or shoreline. Meals commonly feature hot breakfasts with coffee, tea, and juice; lunches with sandwiches, fresh fruit, and snacks; and simple, wholesome dinners with a balance of protein, grains, and vegetables. Many common dietary needs can be accommodated with advance notice, so please share any allergies or restrictions during registration.
What are the accommodations like on this Hawaiian adventure?
You’ll stay in comfortable, lodge‑based accommodations that fit the soft‑adventure style of the trip—no camping, no bunkhouses. On this Hawaii adventure trip, nights are spent in a mix of quality hotels and locally owned Hawaiian cottages in Kona, Pahala, and Hilo. Rooms typically have 2 people, matched by gender or by request if you’re traveling with a partner or friend. You’ll have real beds, showers, and common spaces to relax in each evening. Meals are included and are a mix of local restaurant meals and group‑prepared dinners using fresh island ingredients.
What level of fitness is needed for this Hawaii Hike and Explore trip?
You don’t need to be an elite hiker, but you should feel comfortable walking a few miles on varied terrain most days. On this Hawaii Hike and Explore trip, daily outings typically range from about one to five miles of walking or hiking, broken up with time for views, photos, meals, and rest. You’ll be on a mix of surfaces—sandy beaches, packed dirt trails, and some uneven or rocky volcanic ground where you’ll want to watch your footing. A few sections may be steeper or have roots and rocks. You carry only a small day pack with water, lunch, and personal items. If you have specific questions about your fitness level or mobility, the Wilderness Inquiry team is happy to talk through your situation and decide together whether this adventure matches what you’re looking for.
