Voyageurs National Park

Overview

Voyageurs National Park is one of Minnesota’s hidden gems, offering a vast wilderness of lakes, islands, and boreal forest along the Canadian border. Though less well-known than the Boundary Waters, Voyageurs is equally spectacular and provides a uniquely water-based experience. With its expansive waterways, the park allows for multi-day canoe adventures without the frequent portages required elsewhere.

On a Wilderness Inquiry trip, you’ll travel in sturdy North canoes, following routes once paddled by the French-Canadian voyageurs. Each day brings opportunities to explore quiet bays, forested shorelines, and islands rich with wildlife. Evenings are spent camping along the lake shores, sharing meals by the fire, and taking in skies so dark and clear they reveal dazzling displays of stars and sometimes even the Northern Lights.

Our guides handle all logistics, from permits to gear, so you can fully immerse yourself in the beauty of this water wilderness. Whether paddling under the summer sun or enjoying the stillness of an early morning mist, Voyageurs National Park delivers an authentic, unforgettable adventure in the heart of northern Minnesota.

Voyageurs National Park - Trip Review:

“Even though I grew up in Minnesota, Northern Minnesota was a place I never experienced. Thanks to a collaborative partnership between Wilderness Inquiry, National Park Service, and Blue Star Families, our family, along with two other military families, was able to connect, reconnect, and recharge with an indescribable canoe trip.” — Voyageurs National Park, Family Adventure

Where is Voyageurs National Park?

Voyageurs National Park is located in northern Minnesota, near International Falls, along the Canadian border. Covering over 218,000 acres of lakes, islands, and boreal forest, it preserves the historic water routes once traveled by French-Canadian fur traders known as voyageurs. Much of the park is water-based, with many areas accessible only by boat.

What is the weather like in Voyageurs National Park?

The park experiences warm summers and long, cold winters. Summer days are pleasant for canoeing and hiking, with highs often in the 70s–80s°F. Winters bring heavy snow and freezing temperatures, making the park a destination for snowshoeing, skiing, and even traveling on ice roads. Spring and fall bring cooler temperatures and colorful scenery, but the weather can change quickly year-round.

How is camping in Voyageurs National Park?

Camping in Voyageurs is a unique, water-based experience. There are more than 280 designated campsites scattered across islands and shorelines, all of which require reservations. Campsites are only accessible by boat, offering a true wilderness feel with solitude, star-filled skies, and direct access to the lakes.

Can you see the Northern Lights in Voyageurs?

Voyageurs is one of the best places in the United States to see the Northern Lights thanks to its dark skies and northern location. While aurora displays can happen any time of year, fall, winter, and early spring offer the best chances to witness this spectacular natural phenomenon.

Is there a visitor center at Voyageurs National Park?

The park has several visitor centers, including the year-round Rainy Lake Visitor Center and seasonal centers at Ash River and Kabetogama Lake. These provide trip information, permits, and interpretive exhibits to help visitors make the most of their experience.
