Midwest Adventures, Made Doable

Experience the Apostle Islands and Boundary Waters.

Guided, participatory trips designed to feel supportive, not overwhelming.

If a trip like this has been sitting on your “we should do that someday” list, you’re not alone.

Wilderness Inquiry offers guided outdoor adventures in the Upper Midwest that make it easier to actually go. We take care of routes, permits, gear, meals, and safety planning so you don’t have to figure it all out on your own.

You’ll paddle, camp, and explore Midwest gems, with experienced guides alongside you, helping everything feel organized, supported, and doable.

Whether you’re traveling with a partner, friends, or family, these trips are designed so people across ages and abilities can participate—not just watch.

Two Ways to Experience the Midwest

Apostle Islands

Apostle Islands
Kayak along red sandstone cliffs, paddle into sea caves, and explore quiet island beaches on Lake Superior. This trip combines time on the water with space to slow down and take it all in.

Boundary Waters

Boundary Waters

Paddle interconnected lakes, and camp under tall pines in one of the country’s most iconic canoe wilderness areas. Days are active but manageable, with plenty of time to connect around camp.

What to Expect on a Wilderness Inquiry Trip

  • Guided and supported: We handle planning, logistics, and safety
  • Participatory: You paddle, help with camp, and share the experience
  • Designed for real people: Challenging enough to feel proud, not overwhelming
  • Inclusive by design: Trips are built for a range of ages, abilities, and experience levels

As a nonprofit, Wilderness Inquiry uses trip revenue to help open the outdoors for under-resourced youth, people experiencing disability, military families, and communities underrepresented in outdoor spaces.
