Impactful Paddling
Outdoor engagement is demonstrated to lead to positive learning and health outcomes. But access to nature is not equitable for all. That’s why the work of Canoemobile is so important.
Canoemobile meets youth and families in the communities where they live — in their neighborhoods, schools, and local parks — and provides opportunities to explore nature close to home.
Shared outdoor experiences continue to be a positive force in building community and fostering connection. Programs like Canoemobile facilitate an introduction to nature-based experiences, offering participants the opportunity to learn and explore outside — together.

Learn, Grow, and Thrive in the Outdoors
By creating shared spaces for outdoor engagement, teaching outdoor skills, and working directly with local partners and families, Canoemobile provides a foundation for youth and the adults in their lives to safely and positively experience the outdoors.
From Participants
Building Canoemobile
What began as a local mission to bridge the gap between urban youth and the outdoors has transformed into a nationwide voyage. In 2008, Wilderness Inquiry — alongside the National Park Service and Mississippi Park Connection — launched Urban Wilderness Canoe Adventures (UWCA) to turn the Twin Cities’ waterways into floating classrooms.
By blending place-based education and experiential learning with nature, we’ve paddled an impactful course.
Local Impact to National Expansion
The UWCA served 90,000+ youth across Minnesota. In 2010, the program expanded to Washington, D.C., leading to the creation of "Canoemobile," bringing safe, outdoor experiences directly to urban environments.
Unified Mission
In 2015, UWCA and Canoemobile merged. Today, we maintain a strong presence in Minnesota while growing our work in communities across the country.
Paddling with Partners
Canoemobile reaches more than 80 communities nationwide on an annual basis, establishing local partnerships dedicated to expanding outdoor access for underserved youth.
