Overview
Lake Superiorโs Isle Royale National Park is a dream setting for wilderness adventures. This lodgeโbased hiking and paddling trip combines the comfort of a cozy bed with the thrill of exploring one of the leastโvisited national parks in the United States. Because Isle Royale is only accessible by boat or seaplane, every day on the island feels remote, refreshing, and specialโperfect for travelers who want an adventure trip without roughing it.
On this fully guided itinerary, youโll hike scenic trails that wind through boreal forest and along Lake Superior cliffs, watch for moose, foxes, otters, and migratory birds in their natural habitat, and experience worldโclass stargazing far from city lights. Youโll also explore sheltered coves by paddle, learning basic paddling strokes along the way, then enjoy lodgeโbased comfort at Rock Harbor Lodge each night.
Your trip fee includes the roundโtrip ferry between Grand Portage and Isle Royale, all guided activities, and mealsโmaking it an easy, accessible outdoor adventure to book and enjoy.

Accessibility & Support
Wilderness Inquiry is committed to making Isle Royale one of the most accessible outdoor adventures on Lake Superior. While weather, trail conditions, and ferry schedules can be dynamic in this remote national park, we work closely with you before and during the trip to create an experience that feels supportive, appropriately challenging, and welcoming for a wide range of ages and abilities.
This lodgeโbased trip is ideal for adults who enjoy being active but donโt necessarily identify as hardcore backpackers. No prior experience with Isle Royale, longโdistance hiking, or paddling is required. Our Outdoor Leaders use an expeditionary learning approach, introducing skills stepโbyโstep so you can build confidence as you goโwhether thatโs learning basic paddling strokes or getting comfortable on rocky trails.
Accessibility considerations include:
- Pace and Distance: Daily hikes typically range from 3โ6 miles, with several hours of activity spread across the day. Outdoor Leaders adjust routes, rest breaks, and pace to match the groupโs comfort level, weather, and trail conditions.
- Terrain: Trails on Isle Royale include dirt, rock, roots, and occasional boardwalks, with rolling elevation and some steeper sections. Surfaces can be uneven, wet, or slippery, especially near the shoreline. Your Outdoor Leaders will clearly explain options each day and help you choose routes that feel right for your balance, stamina, and comfort.
- Support and Gear: We provide group gear needed for guided hikes and paddling, including life jackets and boats for scheduled water activities. Guides offer handsโon support getting in and out of boats, choosing footing on rocky stretches, and adjusting plans if something feels too difficult. When possible, we may shorten routes or offer alternative walks to keep the experience enjoyable and manageable.
- Lodging and Facilities: Youโll stay at Rock Harbor Lodge, which offers beds, heat, electricity, and indoor common spaces. Paths around the lodge, docks, and shoreline may include stairs, uneven ground, and occasional wet or rocky surfaces; sturdy footwear is important. Indoor areas provide places to rest, gather, and dry clothing and gear after a full day outside.
- Medical and Individual Needs: Before the trip, our staff will ask about your medical conditions, mobility needs, and comfort level with hiking, boats, and remote settings. In some cases, we may recommend other accessible outdoor adventures or programs that are a better fit. Safety is our top priority, and we want this wilderness adventure to feel like the right match for your abilities and goals.
Visit our Traveling with a Disability page to learn more. If you have questions about whether this trip is a good fit, please reach out. A short call or email exchange with our team is often the best way to talk through details and decide together.

Could the itinerary change after I sign up?
Your trip is dependent on weather, availability, and potential other unforeseen circumstances. All itineraries online are “sample” itineraries that are subject to change. Please check your confirmation packet for the most up-to-date information.
There are many different route choices available within our trip locations for hiking and paddling. The routes will be chosen by Wilderness Inquiry Outdoor Leaders based on availability and the strength of the group.
What type of food will I eat during the trip?
Typical menus for overnight camping trips include pesto pasta, burritos, stir-fry, avocado caprese wraps, brats and burgers, apple cobbler, and plenty of snacks. The exact menus vary trip-by-trip. On longer wilderness expeditions, we bring more nonperishable foods that keep well for days without refrigeration. On international trips, we tend to eat the local cuisine. We can accommodate most dietary restrictions and preferences โ please note this information on your registration form.
I or a member of my family has a disability. Can I/they still participate?
We strive to put accessibility at the forefront of our programs so that individuals of all abilities, including people with disabilities, can successfully participate in our trips. If you or a member of your family has a disability, you will have an opportunity to confidentially share more during the registration process for your trip. A member of our team will connect with you further over the phone to make sure we are able to provide the appropriate support or accommodations you need to have a safe and rewarding experience on your trip.
Do you offer scholarships or financial aid?
Yes! We believe the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors should be available to everyone. To keep our programs as financially accessible as possible, each year we raise funds to support need-based scholarships. Certain restrictions apply. Financial aid is available for a select number of trips and is typically not available for international trips. Visit our Financial Aid page to learn more and apply.

If you have additional questions, please reach outโour team is ready to help you plan your Boundary Waters winter adventure.
