What is the weather like in Glacier National Park?

The weather in Glacier National Park varies dramatically with the season and elevation. Summer days (July–August) are typically warm, with highs in the 70s–80s°F (21–27°C), though nights cool down quickly. Spring and fall bring variable temperatures and occasional snow, while winters are long and cold, with heavy snowfall in the mountains. The best time to visit Glacier National Park is late June through early September, when most roads, trails, and services are fully open. July and August offer the warmest weather and the widest range of activities, from hiking to wildlife viewing. For fewer crowds, early fall is a beautiful time, with cooler temperatures and vibrant autumn colors.

What is the closest airport to Glacier National Park?

The most convenient airport is Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) in Kalispell, Montana, located about 30 minutes from Glacier’s west entrance. Most Wilderness Inquiry participants fly into FCA, where numerous nearby hotels offer airport pickup. From there, we provide transportation from Kalispell-area hotels or the airport to our lodging, making arrival simple and stress-free. Participants may also choose to arrive by Amtrak, which stops in Whitefish, West Glacier, and East Glacier. If you’re considering the train, we recommend discussing your travel plans with us to determine the best station for your trip. Other regional airport options include Missoula International Airport (MSO), approximately 2.5 hours away, and Great Falls International Airport (GTF), about 3 hours away.

How do you get to Glacier National Park?

Glacier is accessible by car, shuttle, and train. The most common route is flying into Kalispell and driving or shuttling to the park. Amtrak’s Empire Builder stops in Whitefish, West Glacier, and East Glacier, offering a scenic arrival by rail — we recommend discussing your plans with us to determine which stop works best for your trip. Wilderness Inquiry trips begin in either Kalispell or West Glacier. We provide transportation from Kalispell-area hotels or the airport to our lodging, so you can focus on exploring the park rather than managing logistics.
